From Billboards to Marketing Intelligence: The Future of OOH

The out-of-home landscape is evolving rapidly, driven by changing consumer behaviour, technology and new ways of engaging audiences. The landscape is changing from “buy a billboard and reach a mass audience” model into a more dynamic, data-driven, digital and integrated media channel. As the leader in the OOH space in KZN we now bring that knowledge to our clients. Founded in Greytown KZN, and grown over the years offering various formats of both static and digital billboards, we now introduce our Marketing Intelligence division lead by Priya Ravji.

Priya brings vast OOH industry knowledge. This is an opportunity for Face First Media to influence the future direction of one of South Africa’s leading independent outdoor media businesses and to work across a diverse range of strategic projects that extend beyond traditional media planning. This role will provide specialised marketing services and intelligence that combine strategy, data analytics and insights to optimise out-of-home. Our aim is to match each client with the right opportunities for their objectives, rather than simply sell available space.

Face First Media will offer compelling OOH media solutions that utilises greater use of data, research and technology which will allow us to improve our inventory packaging and pricing. By staying ahead of the curved we will be bringing insights into the evolving OOH landscape by unpacking the following:

  1. From static to digital - Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) is expanding, allowing advertisers to change creative, messaging and offers in real time based on factors such as location, time, weather, traffic and audience conditions. Our network of DOOH allows advertisers to target consumers on the main highways of Durban.
  2. From mass reach to smarter targeting - OOH is becoming more audience-led. Data, mobility patterns and location intelligence allow advertisers to identify where and when specific audiences are most likely to be present. Relevance matters: the right placement connects a client’s message with the people they need to reach.
  3. From awareness to measurable outcomes - Advertisers increasingly expect OOH to demonstrate effectiveness. Measurement is evolving beyond estimated impressions toward metrics such as footfall, audience movement, brand lift, website visits and conversions.
  4. Programmatic buying is changing how inventory is purchased - Increasing amounts of DOOH inventory can be bought programmatically, giving advertisers greater flexibility to optimise campaigns based on audience, location, timing and performance.
  5. The physical environment itself is becoming a media platform - OOH is expanding across roads, transport, airports, malls, gyms, office buildings, petrol stations, universities and other high-traffic environments.
  6. AI is accelerating creative and optimisation - AI can help generate multiple creative variations, analyse audience and environmental data, optimise campaigns and identify the right messages for contexts.

The bigger shift
The fundamental change is that  OOH is becoming less about the physical billboard and more about the audience, data and moment. The same intelligence will guide where we develop new sites and which formats we build, so our billboards serve customers where they need to reach their audiences.

We now can clearly answer Why OOH to communicate the reach, visibility, frequency, location advantages, audience quality, and effectiveness of OOH media. We will assess the quality of each opportunity, including its visibility, audience and fit with the campaign objective.

Join us on this journey as we bring fresh and new insights on the OOH landscape of KZN and South Africa. We look forward to this next chapter for our business.
